Some new features include:

i. Converter for Oracle was greatly improved. New SQL and PL/SQL constructions such as ROLLUP/CUBE clauses, MERGE statement, NEXTVAL/CURVAL in one statement can now be converted. New packages DBMS_LOB, DBMS_SQL are migrated to T-SQL. Long awaited conversion or record variables into multiply variables (instead of single XML variable) is now a converter option. XML emulation of records and collections was revised.
ii. Converter for Sybase can now work with new Sybase 15.0 datatypes. Temporary tables created with SELECT INTO statement are supported, along with IDENTITY function in SELECT INTO statement. Temporary tables conversion has been improved greatly (“temporary table clean up option” was introduced, constraints and indexes for temporary tables conversion added, Pre-SQL text for procedures and triggers added). Many other migration algorithms have been redesigned.
iii. SSMA now supports Microsoft SQL Server 2008 as a target server. New SQL Server 2008 features make it possible to generate more efficient T-SQL code during conversion. Extended DATETIME datatypes, MERGE statement, CLR implementation for Oracle collections are just few examples.
iv. SSMA for Access now support Access 2007 databases
v. Tester component has been added to SSMA for Sybase. New features of Sybase Tester (such as tables’ data testing and new comparison modes) were added to Oracle Tester too.
vi. SSMA v4.0 users can now enjoy new usability features like layouts, bookmarks, advanced browsing and search, banners
vii. SSMA v4.0 installation does not require J# redistributable anymore.

SharePoint Performance Optimization - The MS Story

After deploying Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 in the corporate production environment, Microsoft IT noticed opportunities to enhance performance, especially long page render times, and spikes in disk I/O and CPU utilization. By working to discover root causes, Microsoft IT identified areas of opportunity for performance optimization, including the back-end SQL Server storage subsystem, and front-end IIS servers. VTD - Wraps up

We finished all the three days of our online premier event - Virtual TechDays. I would consider it a success and I had lots of fun delivering something on each and every day. 2 session on Day 1 and Day 2 and today I did a lightweight session around Office tools and productivity features with Nikhil on the common session.

Folks, who did manage to get to my blogs post the VTD, please do drop a line if you need any specific session for our next VTD's. Sessions around SQL will be good as I can see how relevant these can be to our general audiences and will surely slot them in.

VTD - What a start !!!

Whew, Day 1 of VTD is over but how glad am I to see that this was a super-duper hit for me :). Close to 600+ people logged online for each of my session. I couldnt have asked for more. Today I talked about "SQL Server Security" and "Beyond Relational: Managing unstructured and semi-structured data with SQL Server 2008". I had a lot to talk and I was super excited in doing each of these sessions. We did have some audio glitches but that is part of the online experiences :) ... But, I am sure people who attended had a wonderful time. Please feel free to drop a line to me over the blogs.

Now, that was not the end. I have two awesome sessions lined up for tomorrow - "5 hidden gems inside SQL Server" and "Extended Events" to speak. Moreover, there are also sessions around "Performance tuning" and "Top 10 DMV's you must know". These will be equally exciting sessions for tomm and you must attend them. Apologize for the shameless plugs, couldnt resist :) ...

The sessions start 10AM IST and you need to connect here to join us.

Power of Views with SSIS

This is an interesting and a common requirement of locking the schema once the SSIS package is created. Else I have seen manytimes the nasty error and we need to open the package to re-validate the Tasks. Check this post from Roche that explains how to mitigate this using simple views.

The SQL Server 2005 Notification Services components package made available in the February 2007 release of the Feature Pack for SQL Server 2005 is being updated to include server components and work with both SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 databases.
