SQL Server Reporting Services SP1 Released
-
Was waiting to hear from MS on this. Download the same from MSDN Downloads.
Key enhancements from the Site:
- Excel rendering extension has been improved and now supports viewing in Excel 97 and 2000.
Have been waiting to hear this news from MS. Good work RS Team. A restriction to support till XP was something I wanted a change
- PDF rendering extension is more robust and has better performance.
- Chart control provides more control over display styles.
Cutomizing chart control … Hmmm interesting and a long time requirement tooo by many.
- References to external URLs (images and resources) from within a report are now supported.
- Data caching behavior for report preview is now supported.
And handy performance point of view requirement.
- Newline in expressions is now supported.
Ahh!!! Cant think of a specific requirement here.
- The style of the HTML Viewer toolbar can now be modified through a style sheet.
Wow!!! Was expecting this requirement from customers who would like to have skins type UI.
- New URL parameters offer more options for customizing report presentation at run time
- Report Manager proxy persists authentication cookies so that they can be used by custom security extensions.
- Hidden parameters are now supported.
Handy feature to say.
- Temporary snapshots can be compressed as well as stored on the file system.
Would like to play with this thing. Having Snapshots itself is a temporary output storage wrt to a time frame. Will want to see what is that this feature is to offer.
- Integrated security support for accessing report data sources can be disabled.

Special characters on Office 2003

I was planning to take a session on some tips on Office 2003 at my workplace. Here is something cool I found.

™ - (tm)
Or you can use
© - Ctrl+Alt+C
® - Ctrl+Alt+R
™ - Ctrl+Alt+T
Interesting to see such special characters can be used with simple strokes J. Try the same on Word 2003. It works. More such tips to come by ...

Its Rediff's chance next !!!
-
Its Rediff's chance to make it 1Gb from Yahoo's 100 MB claim. Just waiting to see whoz next in line :) ... For a summary check ...
Some fun toons on gmail are on the net. Check this out.
And my fellow MVP's comment on the gmail fashion ... I do personally feel there has been an cascading effect because of the GMail account's 1GB storage hype.

Security hole in Linux Kernal !!!
-
A Linux bug was recently uncovered by a young Norwegian programmer that, when exploited by a simple C program, could crash most Linux 2.4 or 2.6 distributions running on an x86 architecture.
"Using this exploit to crash Linux systems requires the (ab)user to have shell access or other means of uploading and running the program—like cgi-bin and FTP access," reports the discoverer, Øyvind Sæther.

SQL Server Reporting Services
-
Microsoft seems to have given particular attention to extensibility in Reporting Services. Unlike some competing products, this is a very open architecture. Here are some of the key points where you can customize Reporting Services:
- You can manage a report server via SOAP.
- You can use .NET to create custom rendering components to drop into any report.
- You can export reports as TIFF, PDF, Excel, XML, HTML with Office Web Components, or other useful formats.
- You can create new data processing extensions to allow Reporting Services to draw data from new or unusual sources.
- You can create delivery extensions to allow subscriptions via media other than e-mail and file sharing.
- You can configure a report server through Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) classes.
Overall, Reporting Services provides an extremely flexible way to make data available to end-users. The drawback to this, of course, is that learning to program and extend Reporting Services is not a trivial task. Plan on some significant developer and DBA investment if you decide to implement this tool in your own organization.
