Screen Saver Doesn't Activate in Vista

I had an issue on two of my computers where the screen saver would never start. I could preview the screen saver, but no matter how long I waited it would never come on. I tried a number of things, changing various settings, but nothing seemed to work. Last night I did another search on the topic and finally found an answer:

Anyway, the big problem I've been having with Vista is my screensaver not working since build 5381, it just would not kick in, I Checked everything, made sure there was nothing preventing the system from idling etc..  I was playing around the other day and it hit me.  Right after 5381 was released, I bought a Microsoft Laser Desktop 6000 KB/Mouse combo.  No, it can't be that I thought.  Well just for kicks I plugged the PS/2 portion of the wireless reciever in for the keyboard and left the USB as was (essentially making the keyboard PS/2 and the mouse USB).  Still no screensaver, so I figured, OK let's yank the USB plug.  2 minutes after yanking the cable the screensaver kicked in.  It was the mouse the whole time.

Sure enough, both machines have a Microsoft mouse.

Chris not only figured out the problem, but found a temporary solution:

And for anyone wondering, I did some research into the problem, apparently this issue affects any machine running Media Center with this keyboard/Mouse combo.  If you kill ehtray.exe, the screensaver will kick in, but then your MCE Remote won't work.

Sure enough, if I kill ehtray.exe on these machines the screen saver kicks in right when it should. I was pretty happy with just finding that out and then today when looking for the post so that I could write this entry I found that Chris had figured even more out about the issue:

It turns out that with this KB/Mouse setup and a few others released around the same time they introduced a new "Microsoft Wireless Desktop Receiver 3.0A".  Previous wireless sets had the 2.0A receiver, and I just happened to have one of these old receivers lying around.  Plugged it in, aquired signal with my devices and walked out of the room.  When I came back 5 minutes later, the screensaver was working as I would expect it to.  So it's the receiver, not the keyboard or the mouse.  When I called Microsoft support about the issue, they said it is known but have no plans to fix the issue and outright refused to send me a working receiver.

Seems pretty lame that MS knows this is an issue but isn't going to fix it. I wonder how many of these receivers are out there? The bummer thing is that on one of the machines the mouse is part of a keyboard/mouse combo which I paid a lot of money for. Now I have to either get a new one or kill the ehtray.exe process everytime I reboot.

How about a fix for us Microsoft?

Update: A fix has been posted to Windows Update that is called "HID Non-User Input Data Filter" as posted below by RYAN and Fred. Thanks to my readers for keeping an eye on this. I installed the update and it does fix the issue. Thanks Microsoft!

Thanks for the insight i'm running the actual release of Vista and Microsoft still hasn't fixed the issue! If i've got a usb adapter for a Microsoft wireless mouse plugged in it won't activate any of the power saving features.

I can take this problem further. After upgrading from RC2 to the final RTM last night, I noticed that the screensaver problem persisted. So, today I returned my MS Wireless Laser Desktop 6000 set to Costco. After returning it, I noticed there was a Desktop 6000 v2 with obvious upgrades to the one I had just sent back. Also, the new box said, "Vista Certified" all over it. I figured, "nice," and bought it. Took it home, and same thing - no screensaver.

I think it's funny how MS acknowledges the vista + screensaver problem here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911895 but then sells the product as "Vista Certifed." In my book, that's false an deceptive advertising.

Wow, I almost bought that set thinking it would fix the problem since it was designed for Vista. This is pretty ridiculous, I'm going to see what I can do about getting a fix.

The Wireless Laser Keyboard 6000v2 Set with the 3.1 reciever has the same problem. Unplug the USB connector and the screen saver turns right on.

So much for Vista Certified hardware.

I don't even see the file running that they are talking about in the KB article. And based on the way I read the KB article it mentions that it is part of the Dell operating system. How is that possible if you did a clean install on a brand new drive?

Makes no sense to me!

Here is the fix for your problem:

- Download the lastest final software version IntelliPoint for your mouse here http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/downloads/default.mspx

- Uninstall your current mouse driver located Device Manager page. Your mouse will not work as soon as you Uninstall so figure out how to use your keyboard without a mouse.

- Locate and install the file IP32Eng.exe you just downloaded in previous step using keyboard Tab + Windows keys

- Restart computer and check if ScreenSaver activates. Good luck. I have had similar problem but fixed after installed this new final software.

No go! Oh well....but when you kill ehtray.exe in the task manager it does work. Now why dosen't "Windows Energy" span dual monitors :) Some of the other screen savers do.... it always seems they they miss the final touches and details with consistancy.

Thank all of you guys for the info about the wireless mouse interfering with the Windows screensaver.  I, too, have been going CRAZY trying to figure out why the screensaver would not activate on this brand new Gateway laptop.

I'm not sure I understand the fix for this problem.  I am running MS Windows Media Center edition for Windows XP.  Is there a download that will fix this, or is unplugging the mouse receiver the only way to fix it?

Here is some new insight, and maybe conformation of some old...

I recently purchased this keyboard and mouse configuration from Costco... Hooked one up to one machine with a Dell 30" monitor and the other upto a machine with dual monitors...  I am using just the keyboard... My mouse is a Logitech Trackman on both machines...

One machine will not activate screen saver - the other has no trouble...

Both machines are running same version of Windows XP Professional with the same update information...

Talk about going nuts!  Finally, while messing around with the non-working machine I pulled the USB plug to straighten out some cables and the screen saver kicked in immediately...

Today, I swapped keyboards and wireless transmitters... Same problem remains... Damn wireless crap... Never seems to work as advertised...

I like the keyboard... Its got a nice feel to it... But I can't afford to have my 30" monitor get screen burn because a stupid screen saver and power saver can't communicate to the monitor for some reason...

BTW: I did purchase a USB hub to see if that might help the the issue... No luck... The only configuration that seems to work is when the transmitter is unplugged...

Joseph...

I am pretty sure about this, but from my understanding about LCD's is that you cannot get screen burn. That pretty much happens with CRT monitors... someone correct me if I am wrong...

But I agree it sure would be nice if the screen saver would work. Even killing the "ehtray.exe" does not seem to be a sure thing.

Still waiting for a MS Bug Fix :)

I have RTM and Laser Desktop V2.0 and the same screensaver issues.

I think I've found a solution that may help without removing services or physically unplugging the receiver.

Install latest versions of Intellitype/Mouse for Vista. Ten open up keyboard settings and assign either a favorite or in my case the 'lock' key (the end result is the same) to the description:

"rundll32" powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState

Then set your screensaver (if you really want to see the screensaver) to the desired start period (10mins in my case).

When you press your newly assigned keyboard key, the computer will go into sleep mode, only to have the screensaver activate at the desired interval.  By setting screensaver settings to prompt for a password on resume it serves the same purpose as locking the computer.

Hope this helps until MS release a fix.

well, i was looking for same think as all of you (MS MOUSE LASER6000), because my screensaver did not work. Under winxp it is not hard to fix. (kill  and disable ehtray.exe), but under vista is it something else, i was trying to reinstall drivers, like Dan Jansen said, but without success. It is not some service like ehtray.exe?

I had same problem but with XP Pro. Turned out to be the "Human Interface Device" i.e a Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse using a USB port. I plugged the wireless keyboard/mouse(Microsoft Optical Receiver version 3.0) into the ps/2 ports and screensaver now works.

Hope this helps.

I can't believe this problem is still persisting. On top of the Vista screensaver problem with Microsoft's own wireless products, their wired desktops also cause compatibility issues with Vista. I just bought a Microsoft Digital Media Pro keyboard (so my screensaver would work, which it did), but now have to return it because it is causing my music (mp3s) to stutter during playback (don't ask me how or why). Again, this was a product listed as "Vista Certified". Ridiculous.

# January 14, 2007 8:32 PM

Sean said:

I wish I could just plug in the ps/2 port and 'fix' the issue, however my desktop receiver is version 3.1 and only has a USB port....guess they decided no-one needs the ps/2 option anymore!!

So I am stuck with the sleep option.

Ok so let me tell you I was so happy to know I wasn't the only one with this problem. I'm glad you figured it out so let me tell you what I have done to fix my wireless mouse if your pc has the capabilities, went and bought a usb-to-ps/2 adapter and plugged it straight in screen saver works like a champ now.

Thanks for the help and I hope this might help some of you!

That PS2/USB converter won't work for a keyboard - it only works on a wireless mouse, not a wireless desktop. And, further, the Microsoft Wireless Desktop v2.0 doesn't have separate plugs - it's just one single USB that goes straight to the receiver - which definitely won't work with a PS2 converter.

I just thought I'd chime in, since the info in this thread helped confirm this screen saver issue I've been having with Vista RTM.  Actually, the major issue for me is that using the Sleep mode is very unreliable (half the time it won't sleep, and half of the remaining times, it won't wake up).  It's like having an annoying college roommate.

Anyway, my issue is with an MS wireless keyboard (unplugging the mouse doesn't help).  It sounds like I probably shouldn't hold my breath for a solution to this problem.  Ugh...

# January 29, 2007 3:53 PM

AustinTechie said:

It looks like I posted too soon: After three months of trying various things to solve the screen saver/sleep problem, I finally have a workaround: Since my PC doesn't have any PS/2 ports, I used a cheap PS/2 to USB adapter to attach between the wireless receiver's PS/2 connection and my PC's USB connection.

That resolves the screen saver issue.  But, not all signals are getting through, and only half of the special keys on my keyboard work in this configuration.  And, I can't install IntelliPoint because the scroll rate for the mousewheel on my keyboard and trackball seem to be linked (and there's no happy "middle ground" setting).  Oh, well...

One thing that made this really difficult to troubleshoot is that I was looking for resolutions to the sleep/standby issue (rather than the screen saver, which isn't very important to me).  Anyway, thanks to all who posted suggestions in this thread.

In addition to the screen saver and sleep mode not working, Messenger will not show you as "away" after the inactivity period. I thought this was supposed to be fixed in Intellitype and Intellipoint 6.1, but I'm still seeing it on Vista Ultimate RTM (clean install, no blaming Dell for this one).

I'm so happy it worked that I'm compelled to come back to this site and write about it.  I also plugged the USB to a PS/2 adaptor, which fixed the problem of the Vista screen saver not coming on.  However as AustinTechie mentioned, the mouse and keyboard functionalities are limited after that.  Just change the drivers for both the keyboard and mouse to kbdclass.sys and mousclass.sys driver files, which should already be on your system.  Reboot and enjoy!

# January 30, 2007 10:08 PM

Craig said:

Liz, I'm a little unclear ... what files do I name to the two you mention, or what names do I change the two files you mention to?

Do you mean I should use the USB to PS/2 adapter, and then go into Device Manager and change the default drivers there to the ones you suggest?

# February 1, 2007 4:35 AM

AustinTechie said:

Liz - I'm glad to hear that this "solution" (OK, "workaround") helped.  I have the same question as Craig, though: Were you able to get all of the extra keys on your keyboard to work by changing the driver?  Or, did you just decide to forgo the extra features and stick with the standard keyboard driver.  Thanks for any info.

P.S.  In device manager, all of my keyboard-related drivers do show that they're using "kbdclass.sys".  I have IntelliType 6.1 installed, without IntelliPoint (the latter screws up the speed on the wheel on my Trackball Explorer).

I have a Wireless Comfort Keyboard/Mouse set and experienced the same problem in Vista with the screensaver not coming on and sleep not working properly and hibernation just restarting the the computer. Once I connected both the keyboard plug and mouse plug to the PS/2 port everything worked correctly. This is a problem that Microsoft should fix.

I just purchased an HP Pavillion Laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium installed on it (it came with it). So here's an anomaly for you. If I disable the wireless adapter (there is a switch on the front on the keyboard that allows you to turn it off), the screen saver doesn't work. When I enable it, the screen saver kicks in just fine. I can't find any explanation for this either. I guess I could contact HP which I will do eventually.

I have been plagued with this problem and finally came across these messages. I diabled the ehtray.sys file and all worked fine, finally. Well until the reboot. I wentt into system configuration (start/run/msconfig) and sure enough the ehtray.sys is loaded during the startup. The startup Item is called Microsoft Windows Operating System, and the command is C:\windows\ehome\ehtray.exe. Untick that, restart, Screensaver works fine, and so does m/kb.

Screensaver in vista works now with wireless optical desktop receiver 2.0a for the natural wireless laser 6000 mouse!  Found the thing in a old box.  I gotta get some more of these, seems the only solution.

# February 3, 2007 7:40 AM

SeventhDS said:

From what I understand, EHTray is just a process that checks for remote usage for Media Center.

I also found another solution to this problem. Not so mucha asolution, but a workaround.  Basicly this little program lets you run your vista screensaver as wallpaper. I was able to do this with XP, which is what made me think to search for how to do it. You can do the registry hack way, or just use the program to do it that can be found at this address:\

http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10283

theres a link a few paragraphs into it that says "download Nates application here"

Click on that and run it.

No you have a screensave at all times running as wallpaper. IT will block the desktop, as screensavers do. But all the Aero functions will work over top of it and be viasalbe, as well as the smartbar (or whatever the gadget row crap is called) and the taskbar (uless you autohide this)

To cancel screensaver as wallpaper, just open taskmanaer and delete the screensaver's process.

Theres options in the program to set this up as run when windows starts, when current user logs in, or as a tray app that you can turn on when you want.

The windows default screensavers will be listed, if you add anymore, jsut make sure to add them to windows/system32 dir, and they will show up.

The only one I have problems running is Dream Aquarium, which is by far the best aquarium SS I have ever seen. Im not gonna list a link for it since I dont want to come off as a spammer, but search for it and try it.

Hope this info helps.

I have had this same problem with Windows Vista Ultimate and the Optical Desktop 6000 (v. 2) and tried to contact Microsoft support, but they have not been able to help out at all.  They had suggested disabling the ehtray.exe service (which I have done).  But alas, this has not remedied my problem.  Unfortunately since the receiver only plugs into one usb for the mouse and keyboard, I cannot just put on a ps2 adapter.  It would be nice if a Microsoft hardware product was compatible with a Microsoft OS.

BTW, my screen saver does work now! I use the Wireless Optical Desktop 3000, but the update is for any of the variations.

In Vista do the following:

1. Start button

2. Control Panel

3. Click "System and Maintenance"

4. Under the heading "Windows Update" click "check for updates"

5. Once this update is available for your machine you will see "Optional Updates" option.  Click this and choose the "HID Non-User Input Data Filter" option and install

6. restart you machine.

7. Grab a cold one and think of the old days when you had no screen saver and how good life has become.

It's unfortunate that most people still seem to have this problem.  I'm still stuck using my USB adapter workaround (I'm using a PS/2 to USB converter to connect my wireless receive the machine; sleep and my screen saver work, but I can't use half of the "extra" buttons on my keyboard).

Anyway, I wanted to mention that there's a new version of IntelliPoint drivers available at:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ea22bd62-4873-406a-bbbe-c587d35a53bf&DisplayLang=en

The version states 6.1 (same as before), but the date is newer.  I've installed it, but haven't seen any updates/differences.  Oh, well...

I've been on this thread from the beginning. Glad to see it's going somewhere.

Question: Before I go out and re-purchase the wireless desktop - it sounds like the update fixes the screensaver. However, will the monitor (not the computer) go into power-save (green light turns yellow) mode as well? That also wasn't working before.

Thanks!

Had the same problem running Microsoft Wireless Notebook Mouse 3000 and no screensaver. Quick Google search brought me here and then I downloaded the optional Microsoft Update (Vista Home Premium). Worked like a charm! Tested my Sleep option and no side-effects :) Thanks!

My thanks to Ryan and Fred as well.  One note for the string.  Even though MS "pushed out" the update it is optional!  What a bunch of goobers.  So when I ran updater it said my system was up to date except for 2 optional updates.  This was one of them.  The warning: you have to active choose to download and install since MS must consider this to be non-critical.

Now I can grow my hair back too!

Thanks guys

I just want to say THANK YOU ALL for being here.  I just got this notebook 2 days ago, Vista Premium came preinstalled.  I didn't even realize the screensaver wasn't working.  Too many new things to check out I guess.  Anyway, went in to check for updates and had this HID Non-User Input Data Filter update available and chose to download and install it.  What I got instead was a failed installation of the update with error code "800F020B".  When I looked in Microsoft (everywhere) for a solution I couldn't even find the code let alone an answer.  Anyway, thank you thank you thank you for being here and helping me solve this issue.

I had a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000 Keyboard and all of the following logitech mice hooked up to my machine: the MX Revolution, the MX 1000, and the G5. I was having screensaver problems until just today. My fix was as follows: I plugged in a wireless microsoft mouse (specifically the Microsoft Wireless Notebook Laser Mouse 6000) to trigger the download of the HID update (it's only available if you've got the right hardware connected), then what that didn't work I disabled ehtray.exe, but that STILL didn't work, so I disconnected my MX1000, and suddenly my screensaver works again. I then re-enabled ehtray.exe and it's still working properly, so while microsoft seems to have fixed their mouse drivers, there seems to still be a problem with the Logitech drivers for the MX1000. It looks to me like the Logitech MX1000 is now discontinued (can't find it listed in logitech's products pages anywhere now), so I'm guessing that we shouldn't hold our breath on a fix for the issue from logitech.

This blog is a great resource!  Using it, I solved my screensaver problem (with wireless desktop 6000) by updating according to previous messages.

Now I still need to fix the fact that my computer won't sleep properly.  The problem does not seem to be with the wireless set. I suspect my nvidia board or graphics cards but can't pinpoint it. Any suggestions?

Just in case someone else has my hardware and can't figure this out, the Contour ShuttlePro 2 will also cause the screensaver not to activate in Vista.

Thanks guys, especially Jeff. I had passed up that optional update, and just as Jeff said, as soon as I installed it, the screensaver worked. I didn't even have to restart. Thanks again.

Been having the same issues as you all. Loaded new drivers, got the HID update but, DOH, forgot that I had an old Logitech MX1000 plugged in to a USB port on one of my monitors.  I don't use it, just never unplugged it when I got a newer mouse, but having the base station plugged in was enough to kill the screensaver.

Unplugging it and all is well  now.

Bought a MS Laser Desktop 6000 v2. less than 10 days ago, and like Andy am using it on a Dell XPS410 (which does not have PS/2 ports) with bundled Vista.  Having same issues with screen saver.  Gun shy about downloading the HID Non-User Input Data Filter update, given the continuing problems with sleep, video cards, etc.  I think I can still return the wireless KB/M for a refund.  If so, I plan to uninstall the Intelli-whatever software and simply return to the old plug-in KB and mouse (which I assume will solve the problem).  Lose all those fancy keyboard functions that I probably would not use anyway--that will be my "workaround."  I have enough other conversion issues with Vista to keep me busy.

PS.  I appreciate this blog--it saved me hours of aggravation and probably $100 on the wireless KB/M.

What a great resource! I have been fighting for a couple of weeks with a new machine to figure out what was stopping the screen saver. Turns out I too had a logitech MX1000 connected along with my new MX Revolution Mouse. Unpluged the old mouse and viola. I have my screensaver back. Happy Days are Here Again!

I did have one thing happen that no one else here reported. I could get the screensaver to work if I manually put into sleep mode. Then upon resume it would work proper. Once I rebooted the problem was back. A real head scratcher for sure.

Never really appreciated the screen saver feature..."you don't know what you got till it's gone".

Anyone had a problem with the Photos screensaver not letting their computers go into sleep mode? This is happening on my computer, I wonder if its related to the computer having to access picture files therefore preventing power mode to go into sleep.

Wow!  Like some others have said, this is a great resource.  I bought my HP just over a week ago and couldn't get the screen saver to work no matter what I did.  Finally used the directions Jeff above gave for the update.....worked like a charm!!!  I also did not even have to restart.  Thank you all so much for the valuable info.

I finally got the update and loaded it.  Tested the the screen saver, it worked.  Tested the sleep function, it worked.  Used my PC for awhile, rebooted once, went to bed confident that the screen saver was working.  Got up the next morning and the screen was right where I had left it the night before.  Tried testing the screen saver and it won't work.  Back to square one.  Any
